„I found that I needed really strong tastes because you’ve got horrible taste and I’ve got mouth ulcers.”– Matt
„Even when you don’t feel like eating, you’ve just got to eat… If you don’t like eating a full meal then just eat little bits.”– Susan
Many people who are undergoing treatment report having difficulties with nutrition due to mouth ulcers, a change in taste sensation (one woman memorably said that everything for her tastes like lard), and a loss of appetite. This decrease in appetite can in turn impact on energy levels, your ability to do daily activities, and your social life as a poor appetite and the change in taste can impact on a person’s overall enjoyment of mealtimes with family and friends. Even if you are having difficulties with your appetite or taste sensation, it is important to continue eating, as your body needs a good balanced diet now more than ever.
As a result of these difficulties, maintaining your weight can be a common problem.
Suggestions for managing appetite and taste difficulties:
See a specialist:Some people consider going to a nutritionist for assistance. Just remember that a dietician is often a possible member of your treatment team, so see if you can get referred to one.
Flexible Cooking Arrangements: If you are finding it difficult to get the energy up to cook, some men and women we spoke to suggested that on the days when you have slightly more energy it is good to cook up a big batch of soup or pasta and freeze it so you can just reheat it in the microwave for those days when your appetite and energy are both low. Other individuals reported that their friends or family are willing to provide support with cooking, and a ‘cooking roster’ may be something you could work out with them.
Resources There are some good resources available on the internet on what food you should be eating, such as the Cancer Council NSW’s “Pastile marire” booklet.
