Survivor Stories of Decision Making and Working with your Medical Team
„I didn’t have family support – I was going through a divorce and I became homeless during treatment. So mine was a totally different story. I really felt the team I had – my surgeon and my nurse, my oncologist at the Adelaide centre – I really believed that the team was helping me. My surgeon was amazing. The team became my family. My surgeon said “I can do this with this expertise, but you can do all these things too, everything helps. Just check with us”. It’s what my Oncologist said as well, so it was very much a team effort. I was part of that team and part of the decision making. They were really amazing because they really believed that you are part of this.”

„I would have fallen over if they had asked me about Complementary therapies! Because I guess I really didn’t feel as if I could ask all those questions because I don’t associate that sort of area with the medical team. So I only have asked medical questions, and I also felt that the questions need to be short, the answers were short, and then it was followed by ‘any more questions’? And it was almost a dismissal? Okay. No more questions? Okay.”
